Accountability & Improvement

Help Us Prepare for the 2013 TELL Survey

The third iteration of the biennial Teaching, Empowerment, Leading and Learning (TELL) survey will launch in February 2013. This online survey will promote discussions in schools and districts about instruction, planning time, professional development, school improvement and related policy issues.

In preparation, CDE will send out "headcount numbers" (based upon data from the 2011 HR collection) at the end of November to district superintendents and HR contacts to determine the number of codes sent to each school for staff to access the survey. Districts must confirm the numbers by Dec. 14. Schools and districts must have at least 50 percent participation to view their own data for improvement efforts. Inaccurate counts could result in an interference with schools getting their TELL survey data back.

Start planning now how your data can inform improvement planning efforts and to get a good response rate in your schools and district.

Data Systems

Need Help with Your 2011-12 Civil Rights Data Collection? A New Tool Will Do Just That

One-half of local education agencies have begun the 2011-12 Civil Rights Data Collection data submission process and 8 percent have certified their data.

As a result of a suggestion by Superintendent Bruce Hankins, a new specialized tool completes the CRDC that is designed for small school districts with a small number of students. The tool is a zeros template that can be used on the CRDC website to pre-populate the race ethnicity tables with zeros to reduce the burden for small LEAs. Once the zeros template is uploaded the LEA can enter the small amount of data by deleting zeros. The CRDC website for collecting CRDC data includes something called skip logic that tailors the school level data tables and questions for the grades you select. In combination with the skip logic, this zeros template tool will make the collection less burdensome and much easier for a school district to enter its data and complete the CRDC.

Contact Jan Rose Petro if you would like to receive the template and instructions.

Support & Intervention

Participate in the Credit Recovery Programs Survey

CDE is conducting a survey of public high schools regarding the use of credit recovery programs. Data collected will help identify the types of credit recovery programs currently in place, understand the perceived benefits and shortcomings of those programs, and determine what technical assistance and supports are needed to develop more effective credit recovery programs.

High school and district-based staff that make decisions about credit recovery programs, whether they have a program in place or not, are encouraged to participate.

Participation in this 35 minute survey is voluntary, but your responses are valuable. The survey closes Friday, Nov. 16.
