Early Learning & School Readiness

Apply for School Readiness Assessment Funds

CDE is accepting new and renewal applications for funds to purchase Teaching Strategies GOLD subscriptions for the 2014-2015 school year. The application will allow districts to request funds to cover 100 percent of subscription costs for kindergarten students for the 2014-2015 school year. The negotiated price for the subscriptions are $8.95 per child.

Because districts will contract directly with Teaching Strategies for the kindergarten subscriptions, CDE recommends that districts consult local procurement rules and processes. Keep in mind that many districts already have contracts in place with Teaching Strategies.

Standards & Assessments

Learn About Approved Interim Reading Assessments for the READ Act

The READ Act requires the state board of education to approve a list of interim reading assessments for use in identification of significant reading deficiencies and progress monitoring for students in kindergarten through third grade. In the fall, CDE conducted an assessment review process and presented recommendations to the state board at their December 2013 meeting.

After conducting an appeal process for assessments that did not meet state criteria, the department presented final recommendations for state board approval at their February 2014 meeting. The state board approved seven English and three Spanish reading assessments: aimsweb; Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Learning Skills Next (DIBELS Next), Indicadores Dinámicos del Éxito en la Lectura (IDEL); Formative Assessment System for Teachers (FAST); i Ready; ISIP Early Reading, ISIP Early Reading Spanish; Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS), Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening Español; and STAR Early Learning.

Districts have until Tuesday, July 1, 2016 to transition to the approved interim assessments. The department will conduct an additional assessment review process prior to this date.

A full description of the review process can be found at http://bit.ly/1aHw1Ub.

Apply or Renew Your Application for the Early Literacy Assessment Tool Project

CDE is accepting applications from new and renewal applicants for the Early Literacy Assessment Tool Project. Pending legislative approval during the 2014 legislative session, the department will offer the project for the 2014-15 school year. This program is designed to assist teachers in meeting the assessment requirements of the READ Act. The tool will allow teachers to obtain real-time assessment of the reading skill levels of students enrolled in kindergarten, grades one, two and/or three and, based on the assessment results, generate intervention plans and materials.

By participating, local education agencies will be supplied with the online assessment of DIBELS Next, an approved interim measure and the Burst diagnostic reading assessments, an approved diagnostic measure. First-time participating local education agencies will receive assessment kits. Each school will receive one kit per grade level (renewal applicants will not receive additional kits). All participating LEAs will receive licenses to use the assessment. Districts will be responsible for providing their own hardware. For a list of devices that support the software, visit http://bit.ly/1lXWkMx.

Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15.
