Early Learning & School Readiness

Apply for School Readiness Assessment Funds

CDE is accepting new and renewal applications for funds to purchase Teaching Strategies GOLD subscriptions for the 2014-2015 school year. The application will allow districts to request funds to cover 100 percent of subscription costs for kindergarten students for the 2014-2015 school year. The negotiated price for the subscriptions are $8.95 per child.

Because districts will contract directly with Teaching Strategies for the kindergarten subscriptions, CDE recommends that districts consult local procurement rules and processes. Keep in mind that many districts already have contracts in place with Teaching Strategies.

A link to the request for proposal and webinar recording can be found at the link below.

Health, Wellness & Nutrition

Learn If Your School Food Authority Is Required to Participate in the Breakfast After the Bell Nutrition Program

The purpose of the Breakfast After the Bell Nutrition Program is to offer breakfast at no cost to each student enrolled in a public school that has 70 percent or more students who are eligible for free or reduced price lunch under the National School Lunch Program.

Beginning in the 2014–2015 school year, schools participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch Program with a free and reduced percentage from the prior year of 80 percent or greater must offer breakfast at no cost to each student after the tardy bell. Beginning in the 2015–2016 school year and each year thereafter, schools with a free and reduced percentage from the prior year of 70 percent or greater will be required to participate. School districts with less than 1,000 students are not required to participate.

The Office of School Nutrition is developing an implementation guide, resources and trainings to assist districts with Breakfast After the Bell Nutrition Program implementation.

Visit http://bit.ly/1dMl8Sh to find out if your school food authority is required to participate in the program.
