Early Learning & School Readiness

Attend a Webinar on Colorado's Quality Rating and Improvement System for Colorado Preschools on April 23

CDE in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Human Services is presenting a webinar on Wednesday, April 23 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. about Colorado’s new Quality Rating and Improvement System for all early education and care programs, including preschool programs. CDHS is implementing the system pursuant to H.B. 11-1027 (C.R.S. 26-6-604) beginning in 2014 and ending by January 2016.

The system will be embedded in the licensing of all early education and care programs, including preschool programs and will be implemented in four phases. Phase 1 includes current Qualistar Rated programs or programs accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Phase 2 includes programs that are partially quality rated. Phase 3 includes programs that wish to be early adopters who may be qualified to access grant funds for the rating process. Phase 4 includes all remaining programs. The webinar will provide more information on the timeline and implications for district preschool programs.

Webinar participation information is available at http://www.cde.state.co.us/cde_calendar/2014-04. More information about the system is available at http://www.coloradoofficeofearlychildhood.com/#!qris/c5ch.

Submit Your Application for the School Readiness Assessment Grant by April 30

CDE is extending the deadline for the School Readiness Assessment Grant application. Applications are due Wednesday, April 30 for funds to purchase Teaching Strategies GOLD subscriptions for the 2014-2015 school year. The application allows districts to request funds to cover 100 percent of subscription costs for kindergarten students for the 2014-2015 school year. The negotiated price for the subscriptions are $8.95 per child.

Because districts will contract directly with Teaching Strategies for the kindergarten subscriptions, CDE recommends that districts consult local procurement rules and processes. Keep in mind that many districts already have contracts in place with Teaching Strategies. A link to the request for proposal application and webinar recording are available at the link below.

View the List of Schools Recognized as Having Highly Effective School Library Programs

At the April state board meeting, CDE and Commissioner Hammond recognized 22 schools for their highly effective school library programs. Prior to applying, each of these 21 teacher-librarians, along with their respective principals, assessed their library program using the “Highly Effective School Library Program Evaluation Rubric.” This assessment tool outlines what a quality school library program should look like in areas such as student and teacher collaboration, differentiated instruction, curriculum development and leadership both within and outside the school community. In this competitive process, applicants provided concrete evidence that they not only met or exceeded the criteria for being considered, but also showed how they are instructional leaders who help improve student learning.
