Accountability & Improvement

Title III Accountability Updates

CDE has submitted a waiver regarding the Title III Accountability measures, Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAOs) as part of the state’s NCLB Flexibility Waiver Package. Since this waiver request was not part of the waiver package the U.S. Department of Education offered, the request is being processed separately.

CDE is still working out the details with the U.S. Department of Education. Once a final decision has been made, CDE will notify the field and provide guidance around any changes. As a result of this waiver process, AMAO 1 and 2 results will be shared with districts at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year instead of this spring. However, CELApro Growth data will be available to districts through CEDAR at the end of May. Additional directions and resources will be shared when that data goes live.

New Meal Patterns for School Meals

Starting in school year 2012-13, schools participating in the USDA’s School Meal Programs are required to meet new nutrition standards for breakfast and lunch meal patterns. This change is driven by the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. The standards will be implemented gradually, over a multiple year period, giving school district staff and students time to adjust to the changes.

The meal patterns include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; contain less fat and sodium; and meet specific calorie ranges for children in grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Check out the meal patterns, timeline, questions and answers, policy memo, and final rule at the link below.

CDE's Office of School Nutrition will run periodic updates on the new meal patterns in The Scoop. Stay tuned!

“Find a Book, Colorado” Customizes Books for a Child’s Reading Level

The free online “Find a Book, Colorado” utility at provides a way for parents, children and teachers to quickly and easily search books that match a child’s reading level and interests as well as to locate the local library carrying each title.

Users of the search tool can also find appropriate books with a Lexile measure or without through a search using the child's grade level and comfort with the typical reading materials at that grade level. A Lexile measure indicates the reading level of an individual or book. The search utility will produce a starting Lexile range that can be further refined. "Find a Book" also offers a Spanish option that allows users to search all of the titles with Spanish Lexile measures.
