2012-13 School Change Deadlines

Requests for new school codes, school closures, name changes and grade changes for the 2012-13 school year are due to CDE by June 30. This information is crucial to ensure accurate Title IA funding, NCLB ESEA waiver implementation, on-time and accurate release of the School Performance Frameworks and earlier dissemination of the pre-populated Unified Improvement Plans. Additionally, having a final 2012-13 school list earlier will allow for better reporting in SchoolView and access to grade specific assessment materials. To submit school changes, visit the link below.

Braille Format Textbook Orders Due May 15

The deadline for Braille textbook orders to the Colorado Instructional Materials Center for the 2012-2013 school year is Tuesday, May 15. Teachers of students with visual impairments have been informed about this Braille textbook order deadline via communications from the CIMC. Orders received by the May 15 deadline allow transcribers both in Colorado and in the U.S./Canada to begin Braille production in a timely manner, which increases the probability that the order, or a portion of the order, can be shipped by the first day of the 2012-13 school year.

It is important to work with the general education teachers and/or the curriculum coordinator in your administrative unit to determine which textbooks will be used for the 2012-13 school year in order to facilitate this process.

Federal Programs

Tiered Intervention Grant Request for Proposal Has Been Re-issued

The 2012-13 Tiered Intervention Grant Request For Proposal (RFP) has been re-issued to invite additional Tier III schools to apply. This program is designed to support districts with chronically low performing schools in the lowest 5 percent of achievement as indicated by state assessments.

The intent of the grant is to provide funding for districts to:
• Partner with the Colorado Department of Education in the implementation of one of the school intervention models provided in the draft guidance for the use of Federal Title I 1003(g) funds;
• Increase the academic achievement of all students attending chronically low performing schools as measured by the state’s assessment system; and
• Utilize the support and services of an external provider in their efforts to accomplish the above.

Priority will be given in the following order to:
1. Tier II sites within a district that has both Tier I and Tier II sites;
2. Remaining Tier II sites that are equally low performing (see Tier II definition above);
3. Tier III sites within a district that has Tier I sites; and then
4. Tier III sites.

Note: CDE does not expect to have sufficient funding to fund all Tier III sites. Prioritization will be given to schools with the lowest percentage of points earned on the current SPF and demonstration of district readiness to carry out the reform.

Proposals are due Wednesday, June 13. An application webinar will be held on Thursday, May 10. Applicants must also submit an Intent to Apply (due Wednesday, May 16) and participate in a required applicant readiness interview (May 29 or 31).

For more information regarding this opportunity and to access the RFP, please visit the link below.

Create a Safe Environment in Your School, Remove Toxic Chemicals

Spills and incidents involving dangerous chemicals in schools happen every year in the U.S. These preventable incidents remind us of the importance of chemical management in science laboratories, vocational departments, art rooms and maintenance facilities in all Colorado schools. Without safe practices in place, schools may unknowingly create a significant potential for injury and costly removal and clean up of chemical spills.

The Rules and Regulations Governing Schools in the State of Colorado apply to all public and private schools in the state. These rules require schools to inventory chemicals annually, store chemicals safely by reactive groups and in appropriate storage cabinets. The regulations also prohibit and restrict the most dangerous chemicals from entering Colorado schools. To assure your school is in compliance with these regulations and a safe environment for students and teachers, review the regulations today.

Pest Tip of the Month: Miller Moths

Miller moths have begun their annual migration. The caterpillar stage feeds on crops and garden plants in winter and early spring. The moth (adult stage) feeds on nectar. Remember that the miller moth is primarily a nuisance. They don’t feed or lay eggs in homes or buildings. They don’t feed on any household furnishings or food. They will eventually find a way outdoors or die without reproducing. Keep moths from getting indoors by sealing openings around windows and doors and reducing lighting inside and out. The best way to remove the moths once they are in a building is to swat or vacuum them. Insecticides are not recommended.
