Submit Request for New School Code, Closing a School, Grade Changes and Name Changes by June 30

Requests for new school codes, school closures, name changes and grade changes for the 2014-15 school year are due to CDE by Monday, June 30. This information is crucial to ensure accurate Title IA funding, No Child Left Behind Elementary and Secondary Education Act waiver implementation, on-time and accurate release of the school performance frameworks and earlier dissemination of the pre-populated unified improvement plans. Additionally, having a final 2014-15 school list earlier will allow for better reporting in SchoolView and access to grade specific assessment materials.

To submit school changes, visit the link below and locate the section called school code changes.

Access a New Tool to Deepen Your Understanding of the Colorado State Model Teacher Rubric

To support Colorado school district employees, administrators and teachers in understanding the Colorado State Model Evaluation System Teacher Rubric, a new tool called The Resource Guide for Deepening the Understanding of Teacher's Professional Practices was released. As individuals apply the rubric to their own teaching and to that of others, the resource guide can support observers and coaches to accurately identify evidence for the professional practices. The research, examples provided, and the glossary can be used to support the development of a common language for Colorado school district employees to analyze, reflect, and plan instruction. As with all new tools, the resource guide will continue to be updated. Eventually, this resource guide will be in an online, interactive format, but the PDF version is being released for earlier access to the tool. To learn more about the resource guide, watch this short, recorded video: http://connect.enetcolorado.org/p2yp1kp2sxf/.

Apply to be Part of the Inter-rater Agreement Project (Elevate Colorado) by Friday, May 23

To support fair and consistent evaluations, CDE is developing tools to promote common interpretations of teacher quality and help evaluators provide useful and actionable feedback to educators. One tool is Elevate Colorado, an online inter-rater agreement training system. Last year, CDE trained educators to become master scorers and determine evidence of professional practices for more than 12 videos in Elevate Colorado. Now, CDE is looking for 10 to 12 Colorado educators who have experience with the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards to continue this master scoring work. Those chosen are required to attend initial training on Wednesday, July 9 - Friday, July 11 in Denver on Elevate Colorado and best practices for aligning evidence. Other trainings will be either face-to-face or through webinars in the spring and summer. Additional work throughout the 2014-15 school year is required as CDE continues to develop plans for inter-rater agreement.

To apply, fill out the application at the link below. Each selected master scorer will be paid $2,000 plus travel expenses (in accordance with CDE policy). All applications are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, May 23.

Check out Available Resources for Preventing Summer Slide

Summer slide, in which students—especially those in low-income families—lose some of the ground they have gained during the past school year, is a critical and cumulative issue that contributes significantly to the school achievement gap. Simple steps like encouraging students to read during the summer, making sure they have access to books and informing them and their families about the free summer reading program at their local public library go a long way in combating this learning loss. Learn more about summer slide and how to combat it at the link below.

Learn About Restorative Justice Practices in Schools from the Colorado Restorative Justice Coordinating Council

The Colorado Restorative Justice Coordinating Council invites you to learn more about restorative justice practices in schools.

Restorative justice practices are emerging as promising alternatives to school discipline that reduce suspensions and improve school climate and safety. In 2012, the Colorado state legislature passed an amendment to school discipline that promotes the use of alternatives to school discipline, such as restorative justice, to reduce out-of-school suspensions.

The council advances restorative justice principles and promotes restorative justice throughout Colorado by providing a gateway to information, networking and support. Whether you would like to learn more about restorative justice or already have an established program, the council has something to offer, including a directory of restorative justice programs and upcoming trainings.

If you have an established program in your school, please consider sharing it with other schools in Colorado. Restorative Justice Colorado offers a directory of professional restorative justice practitioners and restorative justice programs statewide. This list is managed by Restorative Justice Colorado and the restorative justice community.
