News & Notes

Apply to Attend the Leadership Development Diversity Program

This program was created to help address the shortage of administrators of color in Colorado’s public education system. As the population of students of color continues to grow, especially in urban school districts, there is little opportunity for students to encounter positive leadership role models of similar culture, race and/or ethnicity.

Anyone wishing to explore becoming a teacher leader or school administrator is encouraged to apply. This is a leadership discovery program, so applicants should be in the earlier stages of considering a leadership position. Certain content has been specifically designed to address the unique leadership development needs for aspiring leaders of color.

The 5-part seminar series will be held in the Denver Metro area on Saturdays from 9 – 11:30 am: Oct. 5, Nov. 2, Dec. 7, Jan. 11, and Feb. 22.

The application deadline is Thursday, Sept. 12. A nominal fee of $40 from each participant is required and includes seminar materials and snacks. The cost of the program is supported by CASE and grant contributions. The application and detailed information is available at the link below.

Standards & Assessments

Submit a School Readiness Assessment for Inclusion on CDE Menu

Senate Bill 08‐212, Colorado’s Achievement Plan for Kids (CAP4K), passed in 2008 with the goal of aligning Colorado’s preschool through postsecondary education system. The act included provisions related to school readiness for both the state board of education and local education providers. In addition to defining school readiness, the board is required to adopt one or more assessments aligned with the definition of school readiness. In December 2012, the state board of education voted to offer districts a menu of school readiness assessments. The first approved assessment tool for the menu is Teaching Strategies GOLD. Pending positive technical reports and final review, the state board will approve additional school readiness assessment tools for the menu.

CDE is currently soliciting additional school readiness assessment systems for consideration for the school readiness assessment menu. The official request for information with evaluation criteria can be accessed at the link below. Submissions are due by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Support & Intervention

CDE Conducts Individual Career Academic Plans Interviews

In order to identify areas of need for districts and schools regarding Individual Career Academic Plans, CDE staff will conduct a phone interview with the main ICAP contact for each district in the next few weeks. Interviews will take 15-30 minutes. Interview questions will be provided to the interviewee prior to the meeting. These conversations will help inform CDE in many ways regarding ICAP efforts across the state and identify opportunities and challenges with which CDE can assist. By speaking one-on-one to each district, CDE will be able to use this information to create meaningful guidance, resources and toolkits for ICAP that will support all districts in ICAP implementation. CDE plans to provide updated guidance for ICAP by winter 2013. In order to ensure CDE has the most up-to-date contact information, we request that the staff member in charge of ICAP at each district email Jessica Fuller with your name, email address and contact phone number.
