Accountability & Improvement

UIP Training Next Week- Data Analysis

The Improvement Planning Unit kicks off trainings next week. The Data Analysis sessions will focus on the annual data analysis process in which planning teams engage to update their Unified Improvement Plans, and will also address new requirements based on Colorado’s waiver from certain NCLB provisions. There are still slots available (Pueblo-Tuesday 9/4 and Loveland-Thursday 9/6).

This is a great opportunity for school or district administrators new to their role or individuals who would benefit from structured time to focus on data analysis protocols.

Local leaders will experience a collaborative inquiry process for analyzing performance data for state-required measures, identifying and writing trend statements and prioritizing performance challenges. Participants will leave with a plan for completing the first portion of their data narrative with their local planning teams. For the full schedule of UIP trainings, please see URL below.

NCLB Consolidated Application - Modifications Due Aug. 31

The Consolidated Application team would like to remind districts and BOCES that all modifications required per the comment log must be submitted to CDE on or before Aug. 31. Thank you to the 74 districts/BOCES that have already done so. All program and fiscal comments must be addressed and the application and budget resubmitted. You will need to proceed to the end of the application to resubmit the application to CDE. CDE program consultants will then review modifications and grant final approval or provide additional feedback to districts. Districts must receive final approval no later than Nov. 15, or the 2012-13 allocation, and any 2012-13 carryover, may be forfeited.

CDE will provide only one final approval letter when all programs (and the corresponding electronic budget) have received final approval. This process does not eliminate the district’s ability to request funds prior to all programs receiving final approval. The comment log found at http://www.cde.state.co.us/scriptscfpu/consappchk/ is available and will provide information about the individual programs that have final approval. Use this system to determine which programs have final approval and, therefore, program funds can be requested.

Tracker End of Year Reporting Webinar

The CDE Grants Fiscal Team will collect set-aside budgetary and expenditure data and final expenditure data in the Tracker End of Year Reporting collection. To facilitate this collection, the Federal Programs Unit, in collaboration with the Grants Fiscal Management Team, will host two webinars covering FY2011-2012 End of Year Reporting, on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m.

Webinar topics include the Set Aside Activity Report and the Final Expenditure Report. The Set Aside Activity Report and the Final Expenditure Report are due in Tracker September 30th for FY11-12 activity (July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012). The intended audience is program and fiscal managers.

This End of Year Tracker collection provides CDE with the necessary data to meet a mandatory federal reporting requirement as part of the Department’s EDFacts reporting. Although all LEAs must submit data in this collection, the data set aside collection is particularly critical for LEAs that implemented SES and Choice in 2011-2012.

Please use the link below to register. Webinars will be recorded and posted on the CDE website. Links will be sent out once they are uploaded.

Move More, Learn More: Physical Activity at the Secondary Level

Please join us on Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. for a webinar hosted by the Colorado Legacy Foundation.

Healthy students learn better. Research shows that physical activity affects the brain in ways that allow students to be more engaged and ready to learn.

There is a lack of resources for secondary-level teachers to implement PA in the classroom and these students are not getting the amount of exercise they need. With PE as an elective, no “recess” and long class periods, high school students in particular need those activity breaks.

During this webinar, listen to experts from our very own state and leave with tangible and practical tools and templates that you can use in your class tomorrow!

Together, we can get students moving again and maximize their learning!

2012 National Illegal Passing Survey Results

We appreciate the participation of school bus operators, school districts, contractors, state associations, and state directors and their staff in the annual Stop Arm Violation Counts. Your combined efforts in this second annual survey were critical to our continued efforts to mitigate these unacceptable violations by motorists and reduce the threat they pose to the safety of school bus riders.

Dropout Recovery Programs & Concurrent Enrollment

We have received several questions about the implementation of H.B. 12-1146: Funding for Dropout Recovery Programs. This bill authorizes a community college with a local education agency to create a dropout recovery program through which a student who has dropped out of high school or who is at risk of dropping out can concurrently enroll in community college.

CDE will provide program, fiscal and audit guidance by late Fall 2012 for voluntary Spring 2013 implementation. Gateway to College programs can contact Scott Abbey with public school finance questions at abbey_s@cde.state.co.us. Additional details will follow with the published guidance.
